In addition to his groundbreaking research in men’s reproductive health issues, Dr. Turek is an internationally renowned master microsurgeon whose patients have ranged from salesmen to sultans. This section is an overview of the medical conditions that are the special expertise of The Turek Clinic. MALE INFERTILITY EVALUATION Male infertility affects 10-15% of reproductive aged couples worldwide and is treatable in many cases. (Roughly half of the time, male factors are the cause of the problem.) Dr. Turek manages the care of approximately 800-1000 new infertility patients annually. Based on his extensive clinical and research experience, he is considered one of the world's foremost experts in this diagnosis. READ MORE VASECTOMY REVERSAL There are two options for having children after a vasectomy: vasectomy reversal and sperm retrieval with IVF-ICSI. Dr. Turek performs vasectomy reversals weekly. In addition, he has taught residents, fellows and other urologists the vasectomy reversal procedure for 14 years and has written, published and lectured extensively on both techniques. He is internationally regarded as a master microsurgeon and vasectomy reversalist. READ MORE VASECTOMY Dr. Turek was an early adopter of the No Scalpel vasectomy which uses a single skin puncture instead of two incisions to block the flow of sperm during ejaculation. Since his fellowship training in 1994, Dr. Turek has performed more than 1000 No Scalpel vasectomies, helping to popularize it in the U.S. READ MORE VARICOCELE REPAIR Varicoceles are enlarged veins (varicose) in the scrotum; they are the most commonly corrected reason for male infertility. Dr Turek has developed and helped popularize a safe, minimally invasive, microsurgical procedure, has performed over 1000 cases, and published his excellent success rates. READ MORE AZOOSPERMIA In 5-10% of infertile men, no sperm is found—a condition termed azoospermia. Dr. Turek is an internationally recognized expert in this field, having written and published extensively, and having pioneered the first genetic counseling and testing program to educate couples about the genetic risks of this condition. READ MORE TESTIS PROSTHESIS For a variety of reasons, in both children and adults, a testis can be missing or removed. This can happen from surgery for cancer, accidental injury, twisting or lack of development of a normal testis. An artificial testis, called a testis prosthesis, can be implanted to restore the normal appearance of the scrotum and to hopefully restore quality of life. Dr. Turek helped develop and study the first and only prosthesis ever approved by the FDA for use in the U.S. READ MORE MALE HORMONE REPLACEMENT As men age, there is a progressive decline in androgen production, which may be associated with significant health problems. The Turek Clinic specializes in the diagnosis and management of androgen deficiency and male hormone replacement in men of any age. READ MORE ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION E.D. is a very common problem as men age. It is caused by a combination of neurologic, hormonal, arterial, venous or psychosocial problems. Fortunately, it can be diagnosed fairly quickly with a history, physical examination and blood tests, and effective treatments are available in virtually all cases. READ MORE EJACULATORY DISORDERS Most of these conditions are treatable. Dr. Turek believes that there is a real difference between “treating” these issues and “curing” them, which is why he offers professional sexual education and counseling in addition to established and innovative medical treatments. READ MORE SPERM RETRIEVAL Sperm retrieval procedures are designed to collect sperm from organs within the male reproductive tract. First developed in 1985, sperm retrieval combined with in vitro fertilization (IVF) and ICSI are invaluable for allowing infertile men without ejaculated sperm the opportunity to be fathers. Dr. Turek has 15 years of experience in sperm retrieval procedures and pioneered many popular retrieval, minimally invasive methods that are used today. READ MORE SECOND OPINION CLINIC Medicine is both an art and a science. There is medical information (science) and there is how it is interpreted (art). Both are required for good patient decision-making. Because medical care can get complex, sometimes patients want advice, a second opinion, to help them on their way. Maybe the care isn’t proceeding the way you thought it would. Maybe the goal or direction of the care is not clear to you. Getting a second opinion on your care is a very common occurrence and can help get your treatment on track or provide important information that you need to make decisions. Dr. Turek is an internationally recognized expert in the field of men’s reproductive health and is contacted daily by both physicians and patients for his opinions on specific cases and medical conditions.
