Varicoceles are enlarged veins (varicose) in the scrotum; they are the most commonly corrected reason for male infertility. In 5-10% of infertile men, no sperm is found—a condition termed azoospermia. For a variety of reasons, in both children and adults, a testis can be missing or removed. This can happen from surgery for cancer, accidental injury, twisting or lack of development of a normal testis. An artificial testis, called a testis prosthesis, can be implanted to restore the normal appearance of the scrotum and to hopefully restore quality of life. E.D. is a very common problem as men age. It is caused by a combination of neurologic, hormonal, arterial, venous or psychosocial problems.
