A Short Guide to Prostate Health
Men's infertility specialist Dr. Paul Turek appears on View From the Bay (KGO TV/Channel 7 San Francisco) to discuss men's prostate health. The prostate is a walnut sized organ found at the base of the bladder in men. It surrounds the urethra, the tube through which men urinate. It produces prostatic fluid, which is mixed in the ejaculate and is important for normal fertility. Unfortunately, as men age, for reasons that are not clear, the prostate continues to grow and can cause urinary symptoms due to its strategic location around the urethra.
Poor prostate health can increase a man's risk of contracting prostate cancer. This is the most common type of non-skin cancer in men and affects one in eight men within the course of their lifetime. Poor prostate health is, of course, not the only factor. The risk of having prostate cancer increases with age (especially over age 50), having a father, brother or uncle with prostate cancer before age 60, being of Afro-American ethnicity, and the level of fat in the diet. Still, good prostate health is one way to help reduce the likelihood of prostate cancer.
