‘Old-School’ Structured and Methodical Approach Meets Younger, Compassionate and More Relaxed Interaction Style

Paul Turek is the physician I selected for my No-Scalpel Vasectomy procedure. I come from a long line of doctors / surgeons in my family. I did not follow in their footsteps, but I learned a lot of medical information as I was growing up -- especially about what to look for in a medical practitioner (due to my exposure to informal conversations among top medical-school professors, etc.).

When I was deciding on what doctor to select for this relatively simple and straightforward procedure, I took it very seriously. Even though it is a quick outpatient procedure, I am very aware of the countless things that can go wrong anytime a patient is in a medical setting. My intention in such a scenario is to mitigate as much risk as possible, and to give myself the highest probability of zero adverse outcomes and zero complications. Obviously, this concept entails selecting the best physician possible in a given geographic location.

As an international businessman, I can reasonably consider physicians in other countries and I am not limited by geography. After investigating a number of top-ranked, published, and respected medical experts in this area, I came to the conclusion that Dr. Paul Turek is certainly in the global top 10, and quite possibly the best doctor anywhere for this particular procedure. I am not a medical expert, but I am good at investigating issues related to my health and well-being.

Having now been through the procedure as his patient, I recognize that my analysis of his pedigree and credentials was valid. He was what I expected: Professional, compassionate, and most importantly, "detail oriented". His structured, methodical approach was old-school, and his compassionate interaction style is younger and more relaxed. If you plan on getting a vasectomy, I highly recommend Paul Turek to perform your surgery. Hope these insights are helpful as you make your choice.

Skill and a Great Deal of Experience

I went to Dr. Turek for a male fertility problem that was seriously straining the relationship with my partner. I chose him after checking out his outstanding academic background -- a professorship, authorship of many path-breaking papers, worldwide prominence and a leading role in a large practice. I've now been his patient for about six months and we are making substantial progress that I expect will lead to a successful IVF pregnancy.

Dr. Turek and his staff have splendid clinical skills. Everything is explained, the choices are thoughtfully presented, and required procedures are performed gently and efficiently, without pain. When I asked about possible complications, he told me, "I guess we're just lucky. Our patients have never had any." But it isn't luck, it's care, skill and a great deal of experience. And he was very well prepared in the event that there had been a complication.

I've probably been examined or treated by 100 different physicians for various complaints and questions over the years. For me, Dr. Turek is #1 over all of them, ahead of the excellent orthopedist who fixed up my torn muscles and the pioneering radiologist who eradicated a benign tumor -- both of whom were impeccable.

Makes a Delicate Experience Comfortable… and Fun!

"If ever I have met someone who can make every interaction and exchange feel like the scene from a movie, it's Dr. T. Wow. We were met with insightfulness, professionalism, humor, and joy. He makes each experience, no matter how delicate, comfortable and fun. I was impressed and amazed. He is clearly a master of his artform, and few decisions in life can be as important as choosing the right fertility doctor. Dr. Turek receives our highest praise, respect, and admiration. I wish him all the good fortune and happiness he so rightly deserves, because he spreads so much goodness in the world."

From Azoospermia Diagnosis To New Dad

"One month ago, my wife gave birth to our daughter! Three years earlier I was diagnosed with Azoospermia which is the medical condition of a man not having any measurable level of sperm in his semen. After taking multiple semen tests, they all came back with the same result: zero sperm. My wife and I were beside ourselves. We immediately began to seek professional medical help. Fortunately, we thought, living in the Boston area, we would be certain to find an answer to our issue. We spoke with multiple urologists, all of whom gave different opinions. Two said we should go the route of a biopsy and that we would have a 20%-30% chance of conceiving. Others wanted to perform a micro-dissection under general anesthesia with a little greater chance of success, but also a much longer surgery. Both of these would have required my wife to go through the IVF process where she would need to take all of the necessary fertility drugs to be ready in case they found sperm on the day of my surgery. None of these options sounded appealing. They required a lot of drugs and surgeries without any real knowledge if we had a good chance of conceiving.

Enter Dr. Turek.
About 18 months ago, I was talking with my wife and we were frustrated, saying that there has to be another way. That's when my wife found Dr. Turek and the Turek Clinic online. We soon read about his technology of "Sperm Mapping", also known as "FNA Mapping". Sperm mapping is a procedure that "maps out" the location of sperm in the testis. Sperm mapping will tell you if you have sperm in your testis so that you can make an educated decision about having surgery. It takes about 1 hr and is done with a local numbing agent and a fine needle.  It's basically like going to the dentist.  I was sore for a few days afterwards, but within 2 weeks, we got the greatest phone call ever from Dr. Turek informing us that they had located sperm in both of my testis and that we stood at least a 90% chance of retrieving enough sperm for IVF if we were to go ahead with a micro-dissection.

I am not a big fan of general anesthesia (which is what the other urologists had said they would need to use with a mirco-dissection), but Dr. Turek said that he does his surgeries under local anesthesia using Propofol. This was a huge relief to me!

So, last January, my wife and I flew out to SF. We worked with the IVF lab in the same building as The Turek Clinic. The whole process couldn't have gone smoother. I had my surgery a week or so after our arrival. Dr. Turek found enough sperm to fertilize all of the eggs that they retrieved from my wife and was also able to freeze additional sperm for future use (if necessary). Six days after the surgery we learned that we had 4 embryos that had made it to DAY 5. The IVF doctors implanted one embryo into my wife and we froze the other 3.

Two weeks later, we learned that we were pregnant!

Dr. Turek and his staff could not have been nicer! They made the whole process as simple and easy as possible and we are so thankful for all of their help.

To make a long story short, I can say with much confidence that Dr. Turek and his team know what they are doing and are among the best, if not THE BEST in the world at what they do!"

‘If Your Problem is Male Factor, Deal With Dr. Turek First’

After trying to conceive for a year, my husband was diagnosed with low sperm count and motility. We visited Dr. Turek who diagnosed him with a varicocele and recommended surgery to fix it. We decided to get a second opinion and went to see a reproductive endocrinologist who advised against the surgery and said that we should try some fertility treatments. After spending $10,000 with her on failed IUIs and medicated IUI treatment and throwing hormones at me, she said that our only hope was IVF. We went for another opinion from another RE who said that IVF was our only hope and that the surgery would make things worse. We went for another opinion from another RE who said the same thing, that IVF was our only option and we should not do varicocele surgery, it was a waste of time and money. Well, F**k those REs, we went ahead and did the surgery because it was in the $6,000 range and IVF was in the $25,000-$32,000 range. No way we could afford to have a kid after spending all that money on IVF. So, we tried the surgery. It went smoothly. My husband and I love Dr. Turek, he's got a great bedside manner, and what do you know, after 6 1/2 months, I became pregnant without any stupid fertility treatments. So screw you RE's. If your problem is male factor, deal with Dr. Turek first. He really wants to get you pregnant.

‘After Suffering For So Long, We Are No Longer an Infertile Couple’

I wanted to update to say that my husband and I have a second new baby. This time on our first try. This is all due to Dr. Turek. Had we listened to the RE's we would have had to go through 2 IVFs (at least) but these were both spontaneous pregnancies. The first was 6 1/2 months after my husband's surgery and the second was 18 months after his surgery. As I said in my previous review, 3 different (highly esteemed) Bay Area fertility specialists told us not to the do the surgery and that it would never work, that we'd only get pregnant with their help. After several fruitless IUIs and doses of clomid, injectables, etc, we listened to Dr. Turek's advice and decided to fix the only known variable. After suffering for so long, we are no longer an infertile couple. He actually cured our problem. How many doctors are actually able to do that? To get to the root of a problem and fix it? I can't recommend Dr. T highly enough. Please go to him if you have any inkling that your fertility issues might be male factor. He will get to the root of your problem before throwing a 25k "only option" at you.

‘He Gave Us Hope For Having a Biological Child After We Had Been Told It Was Impossible’

Dr. Turek is an incredibly caring doctor, an excellent surgeon, and one of the few top male factor infertility specialists in the country. My husband saw him for severe male factor infertility, and he gave us hope for having a biological child after we had been told it was impossible. Unfortunately, there is no IVF clinic in San Francisco that is equivalent to his skill level (and the clinic he referred us to, PFC, which is in the same building as him is a grade B clinic at best). But that said, for male factor issues, I don't think there is a better doctor.

‘You Can Think of Excuses Not To See Dr. Turek, But I Hope You Take My Advice’

Apprehension, fear, cost, worry, stress ... You can think of many excuses not to see Dr. Turek, but I hope you take my advice and make an appointment. It's one of the most worthwhile experiences of my life.

His office is surprisingly easy to get to and his staff is professional, courteous and kind. They could sense that I was really struggling with coming in for my appointment and made the process very comfortable and reassuring.

Dr. Turek himself could not be more professional and friendly. Upon meeting him, I immediately felt relieved and knew I had made the right choice. He took time to effectively examine, instruct and listen to me to get to the root cause of my health issues. Moreover, he addressed steps I should take to better my overall health and state of mind. I am happy to say that there were no gimmicks or hidden fees whatsoever. If you can believe it, this was genuine, ol'-fashioned, down-home doctorin' in the heart of Beverly Hills! I could not believe the level of care and value, it was truly a bargain. I left his office reassured, and with a spring in my step — he literally changed my outlook on life. My only regret is that I did not see him sooner. I cannot recommend him more highly.
